E-Book Readers – The Environmental Benefits

These days, it’s probably fair to say that many of us are more environmentally conscious. We are not about to turn into a nation of eco-warriors overnight, but the most people are quite willing to make a little extra effort to be greener. And that’s fine – it is actually a broad range of small changes by a large number of people that tends to make the biggest difference. The good news is that as well as being more environmentally friendly you can save both time and money at the same time.

A recent study performed by Carnegie Melon University clearly demonstrated that shopping online has less impact on the environment than the conventional method of purchasing goods from retail outlets. The example used in the study was the purchase of a flash memory stick. It was shown that the environmental impact of the traditional retail method was 35% worse than using the internet to make an identical purchase.

A parallel study – performed by CleanTech – found that the typical carbon footprint of a conventional printed book was 7.5 kg of CO2 over its lifespan. However, this figure doubled if the customer got into their car, drove to the store, picked up their book and then drove home again instead of having it delivered by mail.

Roughly speaking, 65% of the emissions associated with traditional shopping methods are a consequence of the customer’s transport to the store and the return journey home.

Not only is shopping online better for the environment – it will save you time and you will often be able to find what you’re after at a better price. You can increase the environmental benefits even more simply by choosing the right type of product.

For example, if you choose to buy electronic books instead of the conventional printed type, you will save on paper, ink and the energy used in the printing and binding process. As a rule, electronic books are cheaper than the printed versions – plus you save on gas. You can even subscribe to get newspapers and magazines delivered to e-book readers like the Amazon Kindle reader every day.

Likewise, if you opt to download music to your PC or mp3 player, you will save on CDs, packaging and distribution emissions. Downloading movies, which you can now do from Amazon, iTunes and a host of other sites also has both financial and environmental benefits.

So when it comes to buying online, why not adopt a two pronged approach. Firstly, if you can save on a trip to the store in your car by buying online then that will normally be a sensible option. Secondly, if you can swap downloadable products for physical ones then you will not only be doing your bit for the planet – but you will save time and money.

Learning Music Production From Home

Learning music production from home is one of the most pleasurable things to do as a producer, you get to make your mistakes without any body knowing, you get to experiment without anybody seeing your tricks and techniques.

Music production is truly amazing. All of a sudden during the past 5 years there was a massive raise in the way music production is seen in the educational eyes and college and varsity courses have been turning up quickly all around the planet.

But is a university or university course in music production what you really need? I think not, all you can learn in music production you can learn from a single internet site that I found while browsing the internet 1 or 2 months back. After studying a three year Degree in ‘Commercial Music’ I took on this course online and realized that everything I had been sitting down studying for three years was available in a program that takes a couple of months to do in your own time from home.

The subjects range from music production, music strategies, pop music culture, hiphop, music entrepreneurship and so very much more. The creative side is so down to you to be truthful, only you can push you and to be honest.. 3 years of studying a degree like myself isn’t going to do any different than a short course can do for you in a few months. You need to do something for yourself.

You need to become a businessman in this day in age, being your own chairperson. Data is the key to any businessman, so take care you get your understanding and know how up! .

Learning to Sing with Beatles Rock Band

If you are anything like me then you probably do not spend much time playing video games. In fact, I hate video games. In my opinon they are a complete waste of time. So then why am I writing about this video game? Because Rock Band is not just a game, it is a truly interactive musical learning tool.

I am not talking about the guitar thing. I actually think the guitar part of Rock Band is really lame because it has nothing to do with playing real guitar and little to do with the songs you’re playing. It has nothing to do with guitar because playing real guitar is about a thousand times harder than simply pressing a few color coded buttons and it has very little to do with the songs because I’ve found that the changes in the game rarely change at the same time as any musical changes in the music.

The drumming and the singing parts of the game are what I find really interesting and important. These parts of the game are directly related to really doing these things “in real life” and they are also both obviously related to the music that you’re performing

If you sing the song in key and with the correct timing then you’ll get a good score. No you don’t have to sing the lyrics (you can just hum) but I don’t think that’s a big deal. What matters is the timing and hitting the right notes. I think The Beatles Rock Band Video Game is actually a really great way to to work on your singing ability. This is even more true with The Beatles Rock Band than with other Rock Band games because it includes harmony singing too.

When you do the drumming on the highest level you you have to hit every drum hit that’s in the actual recording! I won’t claim it’s exactly like playing a real drum set, but it’s close enough to be very effective for practicing.

I highly recommend The Beatles Rock Band a great buy for any big Beatles fan along with (of course) The Beatles in Stereo and The Beatles in Mono.

Watch The Stepfather 2009

He Joins the Household, Then Leaves It Bloody

There is more to Dylan Walsh than his warm and fuzzy “Nip/Tuck” character, Dr. Sean McNamara, a blue-eyed St. Bernard of a plastic surgeon oozing sincerity as he wields a scalpel like a magic wand. In “The Stepfather,” a clumsy remake of the 1987 cult thriller, his character, who goes by the pseudonym David Harris, is more like Sean’s Mephistophelean partner on “Nip/Tuck,” Dr. Christian Troy (Julian McMahon).

Impersonating an empathetic, Sean-like dreamboat, David preys on attractive single women with children. Masquerading as the ideal potential stepdad, he insinuates his way into broken families, promising to be a healer. When the mother and children don’t live up to his fantasies of what the perfect family should be (which is strictly patriarchal, I should add), his sociopathic fury erupts, and he butchers them before moving on and repeating the cycle.

In “The Stepfather” Mr. Walsh’s features freeze into a mask of homicidal cunning, and the St. Bernard turns into a mad dog. From the moment he sets eyes on Susan Harding (Sela Ward), a divorced mother of two, in a Portland, Ore., grocery store, he exudes a malevolent, barely concealed paranoia. One of his first ploys is to deliver a sickeningly unctuous spiel about the importance of family.

Because the movie’s opening scene observes David calmly shaving before he leaves a house littered with the corpses from his latest massacre, “The Stepfather” offers few surprises. You keep waiting until Susan’s children — the teenager Michael (Penn Badgley from “Gossip Girl”) and the younger brother, Sean (Braeden Lemasters) — catch on to him.

In the first sign of trouble David overreacts to the younger boy’s playing of a noisy video game. In the second, more serious sign, Mrs. Cutter (Nancy Linehan Charles), the eccentric cat-loving woman from across the street, mentions seeing a sketch of a man resembling David on “America’s Most Wanted.” She is not long for this world.

The movie updates the story for the age of the Internet and the cellphone, when the click of a mouse can show the sketch from that television show and phones have memory cards. Two decades after the original movie, the notion that a serial killer of entire families could repeatedly disappear and start over as easily as David seems to be able to do is extremely far-fetched. The final showdown during a thunderstorm (of course!) is by the numbers.

When not half-heartedly evoking menace, “The Stepfather” fills the screen with eye candy, using repeated shots of Mr. Badgley and Amber Heard, who plays his girlfriend, Kelly, lounging around in bathing suits, taking showers and cuddling.

“The Stepfather” is rated PG-13 (Parents strongly cautioned). It has mild sexual situations and violence.

Watch Miley Cyrus – Hannah Montana

International pop culture phenomenon Miley Cyrus rocketed to fame almost instantly after being added to the Disney Channel’s stable of wholesome teenage entertainers in 2006. As “Hannah Montana” (2006- ), Cyrus won over ‘tween audiences by playing a perky and charming middle-school student who happens to lead a secret double life as a pop singer. While the premise was the definition of hokey TV fabrications, it was actually not too far removed from Cyrus’ own life as a decidedly normal young girl from Nashville, who also happened to be the daughter of 1990s country music chart-topper, Billy Ray Cyrus. Upon the success of her fictitious pop singing persona, Cyrus naturally launched her own lucrative singing career – to say nothing of the successful “Montana”-based feature films and the expected Disney avalanche of cross-promotional items – all of which secured her status as one of the most popular entertainers of her generation.

Born Destiny Hope Cyrus on Nov. 23, 1992, Cyrus was the middle child of six and was dubbed Smiley – shortened to Miley – due to her sunny outlook and beaming grin when she was a baby. Cyrus got an early taste of the performer’s lifestyle, thanks to her country star-turned-actor father, Billy Ray, who topped the charts in the 1990s with the best-selling single, “Achy Breaky Heart.” As a toddler, she frequently appeared onstage at his concerts and performed a song or two with her dad. When the elder Cyrus transitioned into acting, his daughter caught the bug and was granted a few guest appearances on his TV series “Doc” (PAX, 2001-04). This led to a small role in Tim Burton’s fantasy feature, “Big Fish,” (2003) for which she was billed as Destiny Cyrus.

Bolstered by these appearances, Cyrus began pursuing an acting career in earnest, and at age 11, caught the eye of Disney Channel producers who were scouring the nation for the star of a new series in development, then tentatively titled “Alexis Texas.” Concerns over her age (then 12) and height (then 5’ 4”) were dismissed once execs saw Cyrus’ way with a comic line and heard her surprisingly mature voice. By the time she turned 13, the multi-talented girl had been cast in her own Disney Channel series. Making it a true family affair, her dad joined her on the show as her father-manager who would dole out countrified advice and to lend the exceptionally manic series a moment or two of quiet.

“Hannah Montana” debuted on The Disney Channel on March 24, 2006, to record ratings and became an instant network hit, with legions of ‘tweens tuning in faithfully to indulge in the fantasy of living a secret double life – one that involved glamour and fame. For playing a teen idol, Cyrus reached teen idol status herself and became a teen magazine mainstay whose likeness sold all manner of merchandise – from accessories and clothing to decorative items and video games. In 2007, Cyrus won a Kids Choice Award and a Teen Choice Award for Best Actress. The following year, she debuted at number one on the Billboard album charts with the show’s soundtrack, singing eight songs “in character” as Montana and one duet as herself with her father. The album produced a number of moderately charting singles but sold over four and a half million copies worldwide. The same year, Cyrus also contributed a version of “Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah” to the fourth volume of the Disney Mania CD series and rolled out her first live performance as Hannah Montana at Disney World.

While the show maintained its position as an anchor for the network and Cyrus was hailed as a wholesome role model for kids, she furthered her musical career by signing a four-album deal with Disney’s Hollywood Records. The double CD, Hannah Montana 2/Meet Miley Cyrus was released in June of 2007 and helped the starlet establish her own identity, with one disc containing songs from season two of the television show performed “in character,” and the second disc performed under Cyrus’ own name with the majority of the tracks co-written by the teen herself. The album debuted again at number one in the album charts and launched Cyrus’ first top ten single, “See You Again.” The subsequent 69-date “Best of Both Worlds” tour, in which Cyrus performed both as herself and her alter ego, sold out astronomically. It was, simply, the tour of the year, both dollar and hype-wise, with endless stories told of parents paying top dollar online and through scalpers to get their teens in to the sold out dates.

In February of 2008, a 3-D filmed version of the “Best of Both Worlds” concert was released in theaters and the franchise raked in an additional $70 million dollars. However, only two weeks after Cyrus performed two fan-friendly numbers on Fox’s “American Idol Gives Back” charity special and the same week she graced the cover of People magazine, the teen sensation found herself in a firestorm of controversy for the first but not last time in her young career. The PR meltdown resulted from a photo shoot Cyrus did with legendary photographer Annie Liebovitz in the pages of Vanity Fair, in which the 15-year-old posed with only a white sheet held in front her. The artful, backless photos of the Disney cash cow instigated mainstream media discussions about whether children, particularly young girls, were growing up too fast and too sexual. Having thought Cyrus was a suitable role model for their kids, outraged mothers took to blogs and TV talk shows to voice their disappointment while Disney panicked about the potentially fatal blow to their major moneymaker.

For her part, the openly devout Christian superstar immediately issued an apology, proclaiming the shots were supposed to be “artistic,” and that she never meant to offend the millions of ‘tweens who looked up to her. Cyrus stayed out of the spotlight for a period and in typical Hollywood fashion, the scandal was forgotten in the face of a new season of her top-rated show and another CD release. Breakout marked Cyrus’ first non-“Montana”-related album and proved that her own persona could draw in just as large an audience as her television one. The album produced a number of charting singles, including “7 Things” and “Fly on the Wall.” Cyrus also took home Teen Choice and Kids Choice Awards for both her acting and singing. The following year, the budding songwriter was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for “I Thought I Lost You,” which she co-wrote and performed with John Travolta in the Disney animated feature, “Bolt” (2008).

Cyrus returned to theaters in 2009 as the star of “Hannah Montana: The Movie” (2009) Miley Cyrus – Hannah Montana. The film adaptation, which found the TV teen forced to choose between a “normal” life or one full of show business pressure, opened at No. 1 at the box office, going on to earn over $50 million. Off screen, Cyrus showed no signs of retreating from her superstardom and her popularity showed no signs of letting up, with the actress taking home another Kids Choice Award for Favorite Female Singer in 2009.

Jurassic Park III: This amusing popcorn film that takes a scenario and plays it for all it’s worth as professor-paleontologist Neill is convinced to lead an expedition to the prohibited island where dinosaurs wander, however obviously he hasn’t been informed of the realities. Macy, Tea Leoni, Alessandro Nivola, Trevor Morgan, Michael Jeter, John Diehl, and Bruce A. Young. (93 minutes, 2001)

Chicago Ten: An exclusive documentary approach to the tumultuous occurrences of’68 when opposing groups appeared in Chicago to dispute the status quo, and the battle in Vietnam, throughout the Democratic Nationwide Convention. The film is balanced with excited renderings of the event and its trouble makers (taken verbatim from court transcripts), which became the show of the ridiculous. Without narration, talking head interviews, period music, or considerably situational material, this narrowly concentrated film grants a spiritual, compassionate, and instant portrait of a pivotal occurrence in American history. Cast includes Voices of Hank Azaria, Dylan Baker, Mark Ruffalo, Roy Scheider, Notch Nolte, Liev Schreiber, Jeffrey Wright, and James Urbaniak. (110 minutes, 2008)

The Little Thief: So-so personality picture of the title lass, a disassociated, amoral adolescent floating through life in postwar France. (110 minutes,’74)

Barfly: A surprisingly entertaining portrayal of L.A. lowlife, and boozy, recklessly macho author Henry Chinaski, played with bravado by Rourke. Dunaway is magnificent as his alcoholic soul mate. Based on the autobiographical writings of cult top choice Charles Bukowski, who might be noticed on one of the bar stools. Cast includes Mickey Rourke, Faye Dunaway, Alice Krige, Jack Nance, J.C. Quinn, and Frank Stallone. (97 minutes,’87)

Thieves like Us: 3 black sheep flee from jail in’30s south and go on a binge. The youngest (Carradine) falls in love with an easy, ignorant gal (Duvall). Down in the Delta: With her life a mess and essentially no desire to work, lone mother Woodard boards the bus with her 2 kids to spend the summer in the Mississippi Delta, living with family members and working in their restaurant.
