The Last Dragon is a film that was produced by Motown Records in the mid eighties as a sort of a Kung Fu comedy flick. It was really meant to promote some music from the company like Oh Sheila, but the flick has actually stood the test of time as one of the all time must download movies of the eighties. It’s a lot of fun, it’s kind of corny, and it works as an action movie.

The story follows a young man nicknamed “Bruce Leroy”, a Harlem martial artist who teaches Kung Fu to the local kids. This incredibly goofy martial arts tale takes place on the real streets of modern day Harlem and creates a really quirky, one of a kind movie.

Sho’Nuff, the Shogun of Harlem, is really a cinematic treasure as far as great film characters go. He tries to egg Bruce Leroy into a fight so that he can prove, once and for all, who the strongest fighter in the city is. Every time he steps on scene, it’s with a short speech, aided by his lackeys. “Am I the prettiest?!” “SHO NUFF!” “Am I the baddest?!” “SHO NUFF!” “Am I the meanest, leanest mofo around dis town?!” “SHO NUFF!” “SHO’NUFF! Da Shogun of Harlem!” He wears visor sunglasses, a samurai’s hakama (those baggy pants that disguise foot movement), and shoulder pads, as well as a top knot… He looks ridiculous and he’s just a joy to behold.

There’s a subplot that you probably… Won’t take too much interest in. See, Leroy is after the heart of this girl who produces a local music show, and there’s this sleazy promoter who’s trying to get his girlfriend’s new single played on her show. When you see the video, you’ll grimace and shudder in embarrassment just for watching it, so… It’s funny, but you find yourself wishing they’d just get back to the kung fu already!

But regardless, it is funny, and it does pay off with a big brawl scene at the end when he hires all the meanest guys in the city to attack Bruce Leroy and his students. The end result is a really great rumble scene with Leroy taking on a few dozen hilarious, wild characters before finally beating Sho’Nuff and attaining “The Glow” which is what you call it when they draw a halo of light around your body frame by frame.

There are also some really fun, corny moments along the way. At one point, Leroy tries to seek wisdom from the guy who writes the fortune cookies at the local Chinese restaurant, only to find that they’re written by a computer. Therein he finds that zen wisdom of emptiness and being.

Could the movie have been a bit better without the subplot about the record promoter and his girlfriend? Sure, but there’s always something about every movie where it “could have been better”. Regardless, what’s there is a fun, funny, corny, exciting little gem of a film. Half kung fu, half spoof of kung fu, and all eighties.

The Road Warrior, known as Mad Max 2 in Australia, is, simply put, one of the all time classics. It is, without a doubt, one of the greatest action stories ever put to film and, perhaps, one of the all time great films, period. It is sort of the action film answer to Citizen Kane or Casablanca. The movie is well crafted and the story well told. Even with the breakneck pace and chaos within the story, the movie remains clear and coherent the whole way through, and is one of the all time must download movies.

There aren’t many movies that work so well as action movies while being one of those films you might consider to be one of the greatest ever made. Eventually he must come to terms with his own humanity or lack thereof. Throughout the previous film, the first Mad Max, Max lost touch with his own humanity in the pursuit of vengeance. Now he must reaffirm himself as human, as a member of society, or… What’s left of it, anyways.

The movie is really just one big chase scene, only stopping here and there just long enough to give the audience a moment to catch their breath. While a lesser movie might have been made boring by all this action, in The Road Warrior, the action and the story are one and the same. Character and plot are both developed through action, not like the modern action flick where the fights and chases only get in the way of the story.

In the end the movie is really a statement on heroism, delving into Joseph Campbellian mythological structure and coming up with what many Australians consider to be “Star Wars Down Under”. It’s certainly one of the most successful films to ever come out of that country, and is still considered a national treasure of the Australian cinema all these decades later.

The movie is, really, a classic western in a new setting. It belongs on the same shelf as Stagecoach as one of the all time great examples of how the classic John Ford and Howard Hawks westerns developed their own stories.

The movie is incredibly loud, fast paced, and full of wild, unpredictable characters and stunts. It is, depending on your perspective, perhaps one of the greatest films of all time. Walter Hill directed Streets of Fire as an attempt at making what he believed would’ve been the absolute best movie ever when he was a teen. He wrote the script by simply writing a checklist of things he loved as a kid, and making sure that the script included everything on the list. We’d put it on any top movie downloads list of great eighties flicks.

The film follows a discharged soldier, Tom Cody, as he returns to town to save his old flame, pop star Ellen Aim, from Raven, the local biker gang leader. The movie blends fifties and eighties aesthetics into an all new fantasy environment, with dreamlike cinematography showing a lot of rainy streets, neon lights and classic cars.

The film is really defined by the music, with pop and rock songs blending the fifties sound with the eighties sound. The movie really sort of invents its own, all new genre of music, exemplified by I Can Dream About You, the doowop song that actually charted pretty high on the billboard. The soundtrack is worth a listen whether you like the movie or not.

The story is fairly stock, but because of the setting and music, it’s really elevated to something more than just cliche. Rather, it’s archetypal, the film is elevated to the level of fairy tale or legend by the stock characters and situations. The girl is kidnapped, the hero saves her, the end, sure, but it really does play out as a Rock and Roll fairy tale or fable.

Hill has remained one of the most consistently competent and capable directors since his debut decades ago, and it’s really too bad that he doesn’t often get the respect he deserves. He tends to focus on action flicks, which tends not to earn the same sort of respect as other genres, but Hill really is one of the best directors out there right now.

Besides the rock and roll, the film also has a score written by blues legend Ry Cooder. The earthy, bluesy feel of his slide guitar offers a contrast to the glossy feel of the rest of the soundtrack, and drives home the “down to earthness” of Tom Cody, the character most frequently accompanied by Cooder’s guitar score.

If you want a great double feature, watch Streets of Fire alongside The Warriors. The Warriors is, similarly, a sort of Rock and Roll, street fable, but takes the concept in a rougher, tougher, more gritty direction, while Streets of Fire is a little more glossy, a little more pretty and colorful in comparison to The Warriors and its title street gang heroes.

The movie was original intended to be the first in a trilogy, but, unfortunately, the film didn’t perform at the box office quite as well as expected, so the sequels, The Far City and The Return of Tom Cody, never got funding. Luckily, the film has become a cult legend over time, so it has, of course, earned the respect it deserves as an all time action movie classic and one of the best films made in the nineteen eighties, but it’s unfortunate that that didn’t happen back when fans could’ve gotten a sequel out of the deal.

James Cameron is back in the headlines thanks to Avatar, the new flick which supposedly revolutionizes cinema in much the same way as Terminator 2 did years before. That actually remains to be seen. If Avatar is still remembered in twenty years as a turning point in American film, that’s when it’ll get to be mentioned alongside Terminator 2: Judgement Day. Terminator 2 is always remembered as one of the most technologically innovative films ever made, but with Cameron, the special effects are only there to tell the story, not the other way around. From there it’s all about the humanity of the characters, what they think and feel, even if there is some heady, high sci-fi stuff in there, it’s all about the people in the end.

If you haven’t seen it… We don’t know what to tell you. If you have, it’s a good time to watch it again. It’s one of those rare action movies that actually has enough emotional depth that it gets better with each viewing.

Seriously, watch it again. The movie actually does have some layers of depth and emotional complexity, so each time you watch it, you watch it from a new perspective based on where you are in life, what you’ve experienced in the years since you’ve seen it last. Keoma is one of the strangest spaghetti westerns ever made, as well as one of the last. The film was created at the very end of the spaghetti western era, and it serves as something of a fond farewell to the era of the Italo-western. If you’re a fan of films like The Good the Bad and the Ugly and For a Few Dollars More, you definitely need to put Keoma on your movie downloads queue.

Many spaghetti westerns took previous films in the genre, or in traditional American westerns, and reworked them into something new, and that’s what Keoma does with Django. Keoma’s brothers hate him, and in turn, he hates his brothers. They form a very uneasy truce for as long as their father is living, but it’s clear that it won’t last forever.

The movie uses an interesting soundtrack, mixing that great spaghetti western sound with some interesting folk music. The music might not be your thing, exactly, as it’s very “hippie” as far as these soundtracks go, but it’s interesting to hear something different on a spaghetti western soundtrack for a change.

The movie is loaded with really cool little moments like when Keoma shoots a gang of bad guys, spares one, and gives him the unfired round as a gift. Later, Keoma is strapped to a wagon wheel and rolls his way to safety. The movie is nothing if not imaginative. Much of the action feels like the sort of thing a ten year old could come up with on a sugar rush.

Like so many great stories, Keoma is really about that one thing that we can all relate to and understand: Family. As Keoma struggles to stay close to his father in spite of the hatred that comes from his brothers, you’ll see a reflection of some part of your own family, all of its dysfunctions and all of the upsides of being in a family.

The movie is exciting, funny, cool, eerie and atmospheric. It’s too bad that it was really the last spaghetti western, because it could have started a whole new trend of surrealist, existentialist, philosophical spaghetti westerns had we had just a few more years of the genre after the release of the film. Franco Nero was a legend of the genre, and this is as good a swan song as any.
