Best Christmas 2009 Movie: Avatar
James Cameron’s movies such as Titanic and the Terminator series compare nothing to Avatar, making is the best movie he has ever created. The crazy good 3-D animation and computer generated graphics make Avatar seem very realistic even though half of the characters in the movie itself are fake. The visual effects and high quality work takes everyone who is watching the movie out of their seat and puts them right into the movie. The film industry has maybe seen another level being set to achieve after the release of Avatar.
The main character of the movie is a handicapped marine with the name Jake in the year 2154. He wakes up from a 5 year journey to Pandora, which is a moon of a planet several light years away from Earth. His brother Tom was a scientist working on an important corporate and military expedition however he died, and was replaced by Jake because they both have the same genome structure.
Navis, 10 feet tall, human-like aliens with sparkly blue-skin and tails are the native inhabitants of Pandora. Jake, after signing up for the Avatar Project, receives his brother’s Avatar which is a human-navi hybrid created to be controlled through linking humans to it. Jake loves the feeling of being able to walk again after he first controls his Avatar.
The marines under the command of Colonel Miles Quartich want to launch an attack and capture the unobtanium (which is a rare mineral used for energy on Earth) deposits that lie underneath where the navis live, and the colonel wants Jake to act as a covert mission to find out more about the navis in order to create a strategy for that purpose. While, the scientists under the lead of Dr. Grace Augustine want to make scientific discoveries and findings through the use of Avatars and well as find a peaceful way of getting the unobtanium.
Jake’s Avatar gets separated on a trip and he finds his way to the navi tribe after several adventures. The navis agree to teach Jake their ways and Neytiri, the young female navi who found him, his teacher. Through the use of excellent cinematography and visual and sound effects, the director then shows the audiences the mysteries and adventures of Jake as he goes through his learning process to eventually become honoured as a navi man and falls in love with Neytiri.
This is where the real problem begins as the humans start advancing on the navis and attack them, and Jake battles with his emotions in which he ultimately sides with the navis and leads them in a battle against the humans to save the beauty and the ways of the navi which he has learned through his training process and which he holds more valuable than the humans’ objectives. Again, the director uses fantastic 3-D effects and wows the audience and gives his audiences the most realistic experience possible .
