With the world’s growing concern over greenhouse gasses, and the ever increasing need for green energy, a world without dependence on oil is becoming a real possibility. But what happens if scientists can discover any replacement for oil, and oil products like gasoline to run our cars? What happens if the need for oil leads to another world war, and only those that can secure oil will survive? That is exactly what happens in the classic thriller, “Mad Max,” starring Mel Gibson. And in this day and age, this movie is more relevant than ever. In this article I’ll explain why you should see this breathtaking movie.

Our story starts out out after some upsetting war in some indefinite time in the future. Gas is at an utter premium, and is sheltered safely. Society is just barely held together by organized law enforcement. Our conqueror, Max, is one of these law enforcement officers. His job is an “Interceptor,” to stay on the fringes, and catch up with criminals who assume they have runaway from the law.

We see a few scenes early in the show where Max shows his driving skills, his conscientious morality, and his stout character. He is a family man, and a loving husband and father. It is a dishonor that such a polite family has to grow up in such a staggering environment.

We are also introduced to a crazy mob of outlaws, who roam what they call the “wasteland,” which is outside of normal society. In this world, it is slay or be murdered, and the only things you get are the things that you take. There is no law, and there is a loose band of outlaws that wander the streets and steal gasoline from whatever source they can.

It is when a few of these unruly street gangsters come up against Max’s kin that he gets his name. These outlaws track down and kill Max’s spouse and his child. When they do this, they unleash a mad killer in Max whose character has been described since time immemorial. Somebody who has been distorted from an average Joe, into a decidedly skilled killer in search of only one thing. Vengeance on those who have offended him.

And this is the core of the movie. The first part is all build up. The foreword of the culture in which Max lives, the introduction of his traits, his character, his abilities as a driver and a police officer. Just before the accident, he is shown a particularly advanced car that has an extraordinarily commanding engine. Max turns it down, and decides to follow a silence life with his family. But when they get his family, he turns his back on any hope of a normal life, and heads to the road.

One by one, he hunts them down and kills them. Through potent displays of driving and highly developed skills of road deceit, he seduces them into the hunt, and then speedily turns and destroys them. In one last scene that is especially traumatic, he shows just how coldblooded and cruel he has become. This picture was an on the spot cult classic, and every innovative movie is compared to it as the gold standard. This is one classic movie that everybody should see. Including you.
