A Critique of the New Moon Soundtrack

Anyone who follows the indie rock music scene may have already discovered the New Moon soundtrack. I heard it for the first time a few days ago and I’d like to give a quick review.

If you know anything about the New Moon series and these bands, you’re probably confused by the fact that all of these bands have produced original music for this soundtrack.

You might be like me in this case. I had no idea what New Moon was, and it’s probably because I have no connection to that demographic and I’m by no means interested in a show or movie about vampires.

This is different from most soundtracks in the sense that I doubt these bands have ever even watched the show. In fact, these are the last bands I’d expect to see on a show that appeals to teens with an affinity for pop culture.

Nonetheless, some of the finest names in indie rock are present on this soundtrack, and we should be grateful for it. While there’s absolutely no need to see this movie if New Moon isn’t your cup of tea, there’s every reason to check this album out if indie rock is your thing.

With big names like Grizzly Bear, Bon Iver, Thom Yorke, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and others, this is the best compilation CD I’ve heard since Dark Was the Night came out earlier this year.

There are some truly original compositions on this CD, and many of them would be standout tracks on any of these artists’ original albums. That says enough about the quality of this release.

Forget about what this was made for. These could all be the songs for a Hannah Montana soundtrack for all I care. If the music is this good, I’ll be buying it.

The Gibson Les Paul

The Fender Telecaster was introduced to the market in 1950. Soon there was a surge in the guitar music world. Subsequent to this introduction, the Gibson Les Paul made its debut. Gibson was then and is still a leading musical instrument manufacturer. Les Paul was one of the most respected guitarists at the time. Les Paul was known for his innovation in musical instruments and because of this the president of Gibson Company, Ted McCarthy, recruited Les Paul to be a consultant for Gibson.

Les Paul first made a solid body prototype known as The Log. Les Paul had already approached Gibson in 1945 with this prototype but the idea was refused. In 1951, Les Paul and Gibson began working together and Les Pauls innovative idea created a shock wave in the music community. The line of Gibson hollow-body electric guitars inspired ideas to create the Gibson Les Paul. It differed greatly from Fender because the Fender was a solid body and Gibson Les Paul sported a more curved body and a glued-in neck.

The role of Les Paul and Gibson was not without controversy. One was that the president of Gibson Corporation approached Les Paul and asked him permission to print his name on the headstock of the guitar hoping it would increase the sales of the Gibson Les Paul. It was also claimed by McCarthy that they only had discussions with Les Paul regarding the tailpiece and fitting of a maple cap over the mahogany body for increased density and sustain. Les Paul also wanted the new model to have a gold finish but the Gibson gave flame and tiger maple finishes for it to compete with the Fender.

The original Les Paul guitar had only two models– the regular model, later nicknamed the Goldtop and the custom model which had upgraded hardware in a black finish. There was continual improvement seen in the electric pickups, body and hardware patterns. This seemed to really please guitarists. The revolutionary humbucking pickup completely eliminated the 60-cycle humming that previously inundated the amplified guitars.

The Gibson Les Paul has truly evolved through the years. The Gibson Les Paul models are Goldtop (1952-1957), Custom (1954-1960), Gibson Les Paul Junior (1954-1960), Gibson Les Paul TV (1955-1960), Gibson Les Paul Special (1955-1960), Gibson Les Paul Standard (1958-1960), Gibson Les Paul SG 1961, Gibson Les Paul Deluxe 1968, Gibson Les Paul Studio 1983, as well as the modern Gibson Les Paul guitars. The shisham tree, an Indian native deciduous tree, is used to make the shisham or sheesham style of Indian furniture. Also known as Tahli, Indian Rosewood Sisu and Sissoo, its preferred habitat is along riverbanks but can grow more or less anywhere and trees have been seen up to 1300m tall.

The Shisham tree can withstand a huge range of temperatures, its native average temperature is between 10 and 40C, but its not uncommon for the temperature to rise above 50C or sink below freezing. It can withstand an average rainfall of 2000mm over a year and can survive droughts of 3-4 months, making it one of the most hard-waring deciduous trees on the planet.

Mango wood is a stunning hardwood with a distinctive grain pattern and an overall rustic look. It is used to make several ranges of Indian furniture, one of which being mango cube, which is usually enhanced by staining the wood dark brown with a clear lacquer finish, again giving it the rustic antique look while remaining polished and perfect.

Due to the versatility of Indian furniture it will make an attractive and suited addition to any room in which you choose to situate it, however it is mainly popular as bedroom furniture due to its warm feeling and rustic, homey look.
