Is Your Laptop or Desktop Wireless Ready?

In today’s computer market, built in wireless capabilities are becoming standard equipment. Almost all laptops and desktops ship wireless ready. The reason is cost. However, they should be able to check what operating is on their system, how much memory they have, what programs are installed and if their wireless computer is enabled for wireless. First, check the feature list the computer came with. It will state clearly if the computer is wireless enabled.

Laptops and the Intel Centrino Mobile Technology —–The majority of laptop manufacturers do not explain well what Centrino means but your laptop came with this technology built in that is great. Centrino means that your laptop has wireless networking built in. You don’t have to do anything to make your laptop wireless ready. Intel Centrino is just a name for the combination of the Intel Pentium M processor and Intel’s’ Pro Wireless card. A Centrino sticker will be displayed on your laptop. If you dont see a Centrino sticker check your Device Manager to see if you have a wireless adapter installed.

Desktop Computers —– Not sure if your desktop system has a wireless connection? Just turn it around and look for an antenna sticking out of the back of the case. If you see one then your computer has a card needed for it to be wireless enabled. If you don’t see an antenna, it’s still possible you could have a wireless device in the computer, especially if you purchased your system anytime after 2005. If you dont see an antenna, there is a way to check using Windows.

If you think you have a wireless device, but it has a yellow warning sign alongside its name in the Device Manager, you should take a look at it to see what may be wrong by double clicking on it. Windows should then tell you why the device is not working at the moment and may even suggest that you go through its troubleshooter program. Do that before you do anything else. If it turns out to be a driver problem, you should insert the driver CD that came with your computer. If you can’t find the driver CD that came with your computer – don’t worry because you should be able to find it on line and download the appropriate driver on line. The first step would be to go to website of your computers manufacturer and do a search for the name of the wireless device that showed up in your Device Manager. Once you find the correct driver simply download it and follow the instructions. After all this (actually about 5 minutes) you may discover that you don’t have a wireless enabled computer — oh well, those are the breaks. However, it’s clearly better to find out your computers wireless capacity now — before you go out and buy some wireless equipment and then realize that you didn’t even need it.

Green Manufacturing With Cnc Waterjet Cutting

If you have spent any time at all in a modern shop, you have surely seen a plethora of tools. Many seem very straight forward, while others are a bit more baffling.

Before you hung around much, you may have not even realized the amazing things that could be accomplished with modern tools. While CNC waterjet cutting isn’t exactly brand new, it is still capable of some amazing shows in the shop. By understanding how this tool works and what it is capable of, you can unlock it’s potential in your machine shop.

A waterjet cutter also uses surprisingly little water, only about 1/2 to 1 gallon per minute. The abrasive components can also be recycled and reused. To top that all off, if you are cutting a potentially hazardous material, such as asbestos or fiberglass, you will drastically cut down on dust and toxic particles using this method.

Many people who regularly work with metal are quite familiar with waterjet cutting. However, the technology is widely used throughout manufacturing and is suitable for many applications. CNC waterjet cutting is used on stone, tile, foam, metal, plastic, rubber, composite materials, paper and even food. Each product has unique properties that make them difficult to work with when using normal techniques. Luckily, the cutters can be calibrated to work perfectly with each material, even when the properties are vastly different.

When you realize all the things that the cutter can do, however, it doesn’t seem like such a simple tool. CNC waterjet cutting can accomplish things that most other tools just can not do and better at that. Most cutting methods produce heat and dust. A waterjet cutter, however, is extremely clean and cool. This is particularly important for materials like metal, whose properties can be affected adversely by too much heat.

While it is true that you want to create a great product every time you turn on your shop, it’s also true that you care about the environment.

You want your employees to enjoy a safe workplace and you also want to ensure that you reduce your carbon footprint. By using cnc waterjet cutting, you can accomplish both those goals, offering consistency and accuracy in your cutting and cutting back on the common byproducts of producing a product.
