What threatens Skype?

Organizing its first IPO, Skype has split. In the statement prepared by Skype for the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission the manufacturer wrote down what it considers to be the greatest threat to its business. First and foremost, Skype is afraid of software platforms such as Apple.

It is stated that “for instance, Apple can always get rid of our software presence in its Apple Store without warning, thus limiting Skype’s presence in Apple iPads, iPhones and iTouches. So, they can easily make their own software such as Apple Face Time more competitive”. (Here and further our own free interpretation of what has happened is provided).

And other online software stores are not exceptions here. Even those online software stores dealing with Android-based devices could act like Apple. The Skype commission supposes that “owners of online software stores have ultimate control over services and products based on their software. If they think that Skype threatens their business or prevents them from promoting their own similar software, they will get rid of Skype or reduce its sales a lot”.

Besides, mobile phone companies threaten Skype. They can reduce Skype options within their networks anytime. The company goes on stating that Skype’s business plan, however, “relies on the possibility to go on advertising its usage with mobile devices. We have already suffered from such actions in Europe”.

And last but not least threat to Skype lies in its own weakness. It was initially manufactured for individuals while the company is planning to make most of the money from business clients. “We might lose a chance to make services capable to provide the business class with what it needs because its purposes differ from those of individual users who we always work with. We have already made attempts to increase the options for our business class services, but this might not be enough. And it is still uncertain if we will manage to pay off the expenses spent on designing the services”.

And this, it turn, will make us unable to compete with companies working with the business class services because we won’t be able to fight the “loyalty of business clients to software providers” and “conservative views of IT-specialists who are not willing to choose less impressive Skype services”.
