Sometimes a movie comes along that just makes you sit up and take notice. And leave the theater wondering how in the world the writers and directors convinced the actors to star in the movie, and the producers to pay for the movie. Sometimes these movies are a flop, but sometimes they are fantastic masterpieces that otherwise never would have been made had it not been for the visionary writers. “Crank: High Voltage,” starring Jason Statham is such a film.
Our legendary account starts out with the central character being thrown out of a helicopter. The huge thump he makes on the earth makes the evening news, of course, but not before his body is scooped up and taken away in a van overflowing with doubtful characters. Next thing we know, our leading role is lying in a make shift hospice, and being operated on by a surgeon with a cigarette hanging out of his chops.
He wakes up, and uncovers that his heart has been replaced by a motorized heart. We find out that our protagonist has an exceptionally muscular heart, and it has been stolen to be rooted into the leader of a acknowledged criminal posse somewhere in Southern California. So our character has to not only unearth his original heart, but he also has to find somebody to swap it out with the electrical one that has been entrenched into him.
There’s only one problem. His electrical, short-term heart runs off of an external battery that gets scratched somehow. So he must always give himself electrical shocks to keep his transient heart from giving out on him. This makes for an appealing pursue across the desert of southern California, as he battles gangsters from all walks of life.
All the way through the total exploit to locate his initial heart, he is in steady contact with a buddy of his, who happens to be a trained open heart doctor, although we learn he has had his medical license taken away due to some ill-fated mistake that unfolded with an ex girlfriend of his. But nonetheless, we believe that once our hero locates his initial heart, his buddy will be able to swap it out with the counterfeit one.
We have the finishing scuffle, which includes our central character, two rival gangs, and a gangster’s cranium that is being kept living in jar. In a last ditch effort to charge his heart one last time, our hero climbs up an electrical pole and zaps himself one last time. But the electrical shock proves to be a bit too strong, and he is engulfed in fire. Meanwhile, his accessory successfully finds his original heart, and his acquaintance, the shamed heart surgeon, attempts to restore him to health. Will he succeed? The only way to find out is to hire this tremendous DVD, before it’s too late.
