Use of String Muting To Complement Your Guitar Playing

String muting is another method that may help you define your own individual style. Muting will also allow you to create cleaner, more professional sounding chords and also solos be eliminating unwelcome sounds from your guitar.

There are two forms of string muting, the palm mute with your picking hand along with the string mute with your fret hand. They serve quite different purposes, but both are important to good guitar playing.

The beauty is in case you get a bit wild with your pick it still sounds acceptable. Fret-hand muting is used extensively.

Palm muting is much more commonly used in distorted rock songs. The technique involves resting the heel of your pick-hand palm over the strings as you pick. Most people rest it directly over the bridge, but you’ll be able to experiment with distinct positions for diverse sounds. Also attempt various levels of pressure to regulate the level of muting. This technique creates a percussive, muffled or chunky sound. Combine fast down strokes with palm muting in various patterns with moderate distortion for sounds similar to Metallica or other metal bands.

Learn Guitar Scales : The Weird Sounding Locrian Mode

When you begin to learn guitar scales, you learn how to advance your guitar playing. So, if you were playing in the key of C, and you wanted to play a solo in Locrian, you would start and end the solo on an B note. It would not have to be exactly the same B note, it could be a B note in another octave if you preferred, but it must be B (ha!).

Playing in B Locrian means playing something different than the B major scale. It also means playing in C in a different way than you would if you just were going to use the C major or its relative minor (A minor) scale for a solo.

Advanced guitar players know the great importance of understanding the intervalic relationship between a given mode’s notes. The intervals for the Locrian Mode take this form Root, flatted 2nd , flatted 3rd ,major 4th ,flatted 5th , flatted 6th, flatted 7th . So, if you played C Locrian, which is in the key of D, you would play C, D, E, F, G, A, B, C’.

So let’s be perfectly clear if you played C Locrian, you would be playing in the key of D but with the “feeling” of a C major scale. You would “think in” the series C, D, E, F, G, A, B, C’. Those are the notes that you would draw upon.

Imagine if you played the B Locrian mode (or “scale”) over top a chord progression in the key of B. You would give a very different feel to the song or piece.

The Locrian Mode is not used very much, in truth. There are differing theories as to why. It might be that the Locrian Mode, as it is based on the Leading Tone, is too “suggestive of” the Ionian Mode and thus loses effectiveness. It’s also thought that the Locrian Mode sounds so much like the Phrygian Mode that it’s barely distinguishable and, so, why should a guitar player learn or use both when Phrygian is so popular?
