My Ramblings on Radiohead’s Creep

As a teen I hadn’t even heard of Radiohead, let alone their song Creep. I was more into Indie music, as we called it – Oasis being the band that always held a place in my 3 disc CD player. Oasis were the band in those days and I would listen to them, sing along with them and study the lyrics of almost every song.

Then someone lent me two albums: The Bends and OK Computer by Radiohead. I was immediately impressed, especially with Fade Out on The Bends and Paranoid Android on OK Computer. I bought these two albums and listened to them for a couple of years, and it was only when I heard them playing live did I hear Creep.

As with my Oasis albums, I studied the lyrics to Radiohead’s song in great detail, and when I was learning the lyrics to Creep I read that it was actually their first song! I couldn’t quite believe this – it was so good and seemed so accomplished for a solo song.

So, as with a lot of things that I find interesting, I started doing some research on Creep. It was apparently written by the lead man, Thom Yorke after a girl came and watched them performing while he was doing a gig at the university he was at in Exeter. In fact, rumours are that Yorke started following this girl around campus, and this is where the inspiration for the song came from. Presumably this is where the lyrics “when you were here before couldn’t look you in the eye” come from.

Radiohead released Creep in 1992. However, it didn’t do well. Radio 1 removed it from the playlist because it was “too depressing”. In fact, Creep only sold several thousand copies. However, a radio station in San Fran, USA heard the song and it seems that they did like it, and started playing it. Soon, other stations in the US were getting requests for them to play it, and eventually it was getting requested a lot on MTV. After the success the song achieved in the US it was released again in Britain and the second time of asking it reached number sever in the charts.

Radiohead got fed up with Creep during the 90s though. Because of it’s success they felt that people were only turning up at their gigs to see this one song. Therefore, between 1998 and 2001 they removed it from their live performances. It is only recently that they have started to play it more regularly again.

History Past And Present And The Future Of The Music World Today

When it comes to defining The Future Of The Music World, often one is lost for words. This is because for each and every individual, the future may be different. For, as we age, so too those performers we have loved over the years. Thus, leaving one to question where the world will go related to music in the future based on both the bands of the past and bands playing today.

One must remember however, without these musicians, there may be no rising stars on the scene today. For, if musicians today had no music to listen to in the past, who knows if they would still be musicians. Yet, at the same time, without their presence on the scene today, who knows where the music scene may lead tomorrow.

One reason why, several relevant jam bands on the local jam band scene in various communities host their own gatherings. For, as their fans enjoy a wide variety of music related to style, each gathering can host a variety of performers which one can enjoy along with other blessings in life. Still, there are those well-known musicians who have been playing stadiums for years and still do so on a near annual basis. However, in time this too will change and these people will no longer be playing. At which point, hopefully the rising stars of today will be the concert entertainment of tomorrow.

As for the future of music itself, today it appears hip-hop is the hottest thing with regards to the youth and their choice of music. However, tomorrow we may see a resurgence to country, jam, jazz, rock and roll or any one of the many genres which exist in the music world today. For, as the world changes so to the music. One style which is drastically needed and performed by only a few today, is music which promotes positive lyrics and music. As, regardless as to what one may believe about the Mayans and the theories related to 2012, positivity is an energy we all need to have more of in our lives in order to survive the planetary shift that is yet to come.

As to the shift of consciousness, the one area which needs most attention in the entertainment community is the lack of positive music and lyrics with regards to many bands performing today. However, if one is bothered by such music, there is no rule that one has to listen to same. Although, if a band or band member may be threatening in tone with regards to an individual or group of individuals within their music, then the person need be watched carefully, especially when in concert where children are present as words can mean everything to a child infatuated by such an artist at a young age.

Therefore, where possible, if individuals can suggest musicians which one is familiar with play positive songs in the their performances, one can often have an effect on changing the world for the better. For, only when positive energy is exchanged can the world become a better place. For, as many know, there can never be too much positive energy, especially in a world going through such drastic change as ours is going through now.

In addition, performers who portray threats against others have and may well have their concerts canceled and shows banned in the future by the groups which are threatened. Having already happened to one performer several times in Northern California, this is fact not fiction. Therefore, if an artist, one may also want to consider how and where to place their words in order to promote positive lyrics and music in their performance based material. Of course, when it comes to CD, then individuals are on their own as to whether to listen to such music or not.

Although many people listen to music for the sole enjoyment, others listen to the lyrics intensely, this is especially true of other musicians and poets as well as fans. Generally, such individuals enjoy a wide range of styles with regards to their music as many use such as inspiration for their own writings whether that be songs or poems. ‘Crazy’ by Gnarls Barkley made history by becoming the Number One song in the United Kingdom’s singles charts without one CD being available in stores. Over 31,000 legal downloads were compiled after the song was featured on BBC’s Radio One.

Among other things, that would rank the song right up there as the ultimate impulse buy.

To be accurate, ‘Crazy’ won this distinction because of a recent amendment to the British music industry’s rule that a song’s download couldn’t count against its sales until it became available in stores. However, the point has been made that, just as digital discs replaced tapes and records in personal music consumption, the torch has now been passed to digital transfers.

PC World noted this eventuality in its January 2006 issue, noting that music download sales tripled in 2005. That accounted for six percent of the music industry’s sales for the year, impressive in that it also signifies a dent in the number of pirated tracks. Figures released by the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry — the authoritative source — revealed a tally of $1.1billion in download sales during the year.

Gnarls Barkley’s digital achievement came just over a month after another cyber-landmark was attained. The key to their success to date is their seeming awareness that their objective is to find their niche in the cybermarket, rather than attempt to dominate it. Granted, it’s a mega-niche, but the industry apparently accepts that it will no longer be the lone gateway between artist and consumer.

Retailers, for example, are beginning to capitalize on the social aspects of music purchases. There will always be teens, and congregating for music is a long-standing trait of theirs. When it’s in the malls or on Main Street, the major chains are preparing to offer kiosks where downloads can be purchased on-site. With their vast inventories of stock, these stores present an ideal means of searching for songs, sampling them and then sharing opinions, which perfectly describes the normal buying habits of both teens and tweens (ie- the 9-to-12 set).

Verizon is on the front lines for the mobile niche of music retailing with its VCast technology.
