Animals have been the central part of a number of films that have been made in Hollywood, some of which have had a totally new story line while many have been inspired from a TV series or a cartoon strip. There have been animated films as well which have now created a new market for themselves providing newer stories to the writers to think about. Some of these movies have failed at the box office while some have been highly successful.
Inspired by a highly popular newspaper comic strip of the same name, Marmaduke is a live action movie which released on June 4, 2010. The original comic strip has been drawn by Brad Anderson ever since it started coming in the newspapers from 1954 onwards. Marmaduke the movie has been directed by Tom Dey and produced by John Davis while 20th Century Fox distributed the film. Vince Di Meglio, Tim Rasmussen and Brad Anderson have written this movie.
Based on the adventures and misadventures of Marmaduke, the lovable Great Dane; as the family of the owner of Marmaduke, Phil Winslow moves into a new neighborhood in Orange County. Marmaduke meets new dogs in his new localaity. Mezie has a crush on Marmaduke while Marmaduke himself has a crush on Jesbel. There is a violent dog Bosco who tries to intimate him but fails to do so. Carlos, the family cat is there for Marmaduke’s company as his antics affects his owner personally and professionally and the dog tries to face the challenges of his new life.
Lee Pace plays the role of Phil Winslow while Judy Greer plays the role of Debbie Winslow. William H. Macy, Raugi Yu, Caroline Sunshine, Miliana Haines, Frank Topol and Michael Teigen are also present in significant roles. The voice for Marmaduke has been given by Owen Wilson while Keifer Sutherland has dubbed for Bosco. Carlos has given voice by George Lopez while Mazie and Jesebel have been voiced by Emma Stone and Fergie respectively.
The comic strip on which the movie has been based has been very successful but the same cannot be said about the movie as Marmaduke fails to create the desired effect. The plot looks interesting but when it comes down to the realities of film making and the onscreen show, the movie not only fails but it fails miserably. Marmaduke the movie looks less of a movie and more of a dog show with the element of humor almost missing.
The script could have been trimmed and the jokes could have been made more meaningful which could induce laughter. The acting is also not up to the mark and the actors have done overacting at many places with the voice actors also not performing well. There is still some positives in terms of the treatment of animals like humans and they have been shown to be no different. The dialogues also seem cute at some place.
The movie can be liked by children and the dog lovers but as far as the masses go, the movie would not be liked. It is highly improbable that the movie would even recover its money. If you really have nothing to do and want to take a chance, go and watch Marmaduke.
