The Next Generation PDA Phone, The T-Mobile G2

After leaking word of it back in July, T-Mobile finally announced plans for the G2, the evolution of the incredibly popular G1 smartphone. As of right now, we don’t have all the details, and we might not even have them all at the end of September when T-Mobile allows preordering. However, there was still enough information that was announced in the latest T-Mobile press release to even make some comparisons between the G1 and the G2, and to speculate on any potential price differences. One particularly good bit of news is the early indication that G1 chargers should work with the T-Mobile G2, and some accessories, like memory cards, will also work.

As for most consumers, the greatest difference will be the T-Mobile’s revamped HSPA+ network, which promises 4G-like speeds. Now, you’ll probably here some bickering between the carriers about the claims, but as far as the average consumer is concerned, it’s all noise. What matters is HSPA+ (up to 14.4 Mbps) will be noticeably faster than the G1 on 3G (up to 7.2 Mbps), and although the 4G network is theoretically faster, you’ll have moved on to a new phone anyway. There is, however, one concern about the move to these faster networks: battery life.

Prior to the announcement of the G2, word was that the HSPA+ connectivity apps were power thirsty. So word had it that next-gen T-Mobile phones would have been either using larger batteries or cut the power usage elsewhere. And that looks to be exactly what happened as the press release suggests that the G2 will use an 800 MHz Snapdragon processor rather than the 1 GHz CPU many of us expected. We have to admit that this is a worrisome change since it suggests that the HSPA+ apps are an issue. We’re not sure we like the idea of less CPU power dealing with a more demanding OS and apps. Nevertheless, clock cycles aren’t everything, so we’ll just have to take a wait and see approach.

There are other big changes as well, all of them for the better. Instead of 192 MB of internal memory, the G2 has 4 GB, and it includes an 8 GB MicroSD card as opposed to the 1 GB in the G1. Users will be able to upgrade to either a 16 or 32 GB card as well. The new display is quite nice as well, 3.7-inch (480×854) compared to the 3.2-inch (320×480) on the G1. The T-Mobile G2 also includes a 5- rather than 3.2-megapixel camera, and recording is 720p HD rather than 480p SD.

The other big difference will be the use of the T-Mobile-tweaked Android 2.2 Froyo operating system. The T-Mobile uses the Android 1.6 Donut, and we probably don’t have to tell you how much change there has been since then and now. Froyo brings a lot of exciting potential to T-Mobile’s G series, and we really look forward to seeing how well the G2 leverages it. Right now, it looks as if T-Mobile will price the G2 at $199, which was exactly what the original G1 was priced at. There is also a rumor going around that a $499 unlocked edition will be available, which seems steep for a non-1GHz smartphone

The HTC Legend Is An Oldie But A Goodie

What do you expect from a smartphone named Legend? Lots, to be honest! But the uncanny similarity of the HTC Legend to an earlier model called Hero, dampened such expectations considerably. However, you should know that this phone is its own thing, inside and outside.

Most importantly, this is the first Android 2.1 phone from HTC and it has Sense UI to boot! Before you can compare, the look of this phone with that of the Hero, the sleek aluminum chassis will catch your eye. Add to this the 3.2″ OLED screen and you have a visual treat on hand.

The unibody mould of the Legend makes it really tough and the manufacturers went as far as banging this phone on the wall to prove this! But still, using a case for the phone may be good idea, if you want to prevent scratches on the aluminum body, caused by other things kept in your pocket.

The bezel has been reduced to make the 3.2″ screen look larger than it actually is. The display is amazing in terms of both color reproduction and contrast ratio. The absence of a backlight makes the phone slimmer too!

Under the hood, the HTC Legend has a 600 MHz processor, which you may think is a tad less for a smartphone, but you will be surprised at the rate in which you can perform various tasks at great pace.

The Sense UI is punctuated by seven customizable home-screens, which can be called up at once, by a double press on the ‘home’ button. Adding and removing widgets on these screens is really simple too!

HD video capture is still not available in the Legend, but the quality of video is good nonetheless.

Though it is one of the earliest launches of 2010, the looks and functions make the HTC Legend a strong candidate to finish the year on a real high.

Bamboo Slider IPhone 4 Cases – The Review

When it came time to purchase a case for my iPhone 4, I tried out a number of cases while trying to find a case that could fit all my needs. I was never able to and now I have a case that I use for outdoors trips and a few others that I purchased and tried. There are a number of companies producing iPhone 4 cases and some of the better offerings are the Incase cases.

They make a number of different products, including the popular Incase Slider cases. It’s one of the more popular iPhone 4 cases, due both to its wide availability and its utility.

However, what really sold me on an Incase Slider was the Incase Bamboo Slider. While most iPhone 4 cases come in a variety of different color choices, the Incase Bamboo Slider is the first case I have seen that allows iPhone 4 users to choose a more environmentally friendly case.

The case retains access to all of the controls and ports on your phone, which is a nice benefit as many cases restrict access to the iPhone 4’s docking port-the Incase Slider does not. Compared with other Incase Slider cases, the Incase Bamboo Slider feels comprable and you likely won’t even notice that it isn’t made out of the usual plastic material.

Overall, I really like the Incase Bamboo Slider. I appreciate the fact that Incase decided to offer a more environmentally sustainable iPhone 4 case.

It feels great to be doing my part to help the earth and the fact that they don’t charge extra for the Bamboo case is refreshing. For $34.95, the Incase Bamboo Slider is competitive with most other iPhone 4 cases, but when you throw in the fact that it is made of partially recycled material-it edges out many similarly priced cases. If you’re willing to put up with having to charge your phone every night, then this may be the case for you.

But, let’s not be too hasty!

It, too, has a protective film for over the front. It does exactly as it says-protects the phone from falls and accidents.

However, according to several consumers, it scratches the chrome of the phone if dust or lint get into it. It also needs to be removed before trying to fit the iPhone 4 into the docking station. This iPhone 4 case runs $29.95. If you’re looking to protect the phone and never ever go without a case, then the scratching of the chrome may not bother you.

The HTC Wildfire Reviewed

The all new HTC Wildfire carries forward the Android 2.1 legacy while inheriting characteristic traits of Nexus One and HTC Desire. The 384 MB RAM and the 5 megapixel camera are notable differences but otherwise, Wildfire employs the same 528 MHz Qualcomm processor and 3.2 inch touch screen used in earlier HTC phones.

Wildfire’s design borders closely on the Nexus One and Desire. While its black texture and touch buttons resemble the Nexus One, the earpiece, frame structure and optical trackpad mirror those from the Desire.

To access the battery, you need to peel the cover from the top. The chin and frame wedge has an irregular cut, somewhat spoiling its chic look.

The major highlights of the HTC Wildfire include Friend Stream Widget to follow friends, built-in Flash Lite, Leap for switching between screen pages and an intuitive text highlighting tool.

The battery life of the Wildfire is a major plus. It provides almost 12 hours of battery life on 3G connections which includes occasional video recording, music play, web browsing and photo-snapping.

The Bluetooth, FM radio and other audio file formats are well supported to perform various actions. The microphone of the Wildfire may appear a tad disconcerting, but the great hands free kit for earphone plugs makes up for all that.

Talking of the keyboard, the Wildfire disappoints big time here. HTC phones are generally equipped with extremely powerful and intuitive virtual keyboards. However, the Wildfire’s virtual keyboard lets you down with crammed keys and slow response to typing.

The 5 megapixel camera of the cell is the saving grace since it delivers high quality indoor shots. The overall verdict for the HTC Wildfire is on the positive side, but it is not entirely blemish-free!
