Based on the popular books series called the Vampire Diaries by author L. J. Smith the series that is aired on television with the same name as the book has been developed by Kevin Williamson. The series’ first season was aired on the CW Television Network on the 10th of September, 2009 and because of the grand success and popularity it gained during the first season the production company planned to launch the second season which began on February, 2010.

This series is targeted at the teenage viewers, it tells the stories of a girl who was torn between two brothers love. This extraordinary part that would be why this has gotten so popular over their very first season would be that the two brothers that love the girl are vampires.

Lead role of this series has been played by Nina Dobrev and her character is Elena Gilbert. Playing the two brothers would be Damon Salvatore and Stefan Salvatore who had been played by Ian Somerhalder and Paul Wesley . Another great character would be Katherine Pierce who had at one time loved the brother’s way back in 1864.

Additional characters of The Vampire Diaries include Steven R. McQueen as Jeremy Gilbert, Elena’s younger brother; Elena’s and Jeremy’s guardian and aunt, Jenna Sommers; Katerina Graham as a witch named Bonnie Bennet, who is also Elena’s best friend; and Zach Roerig as Matt Donovan, Elena’s ex-boyfriend. Each of these actors also returned for the television series’ second season; no changes in characters occurred.

After its initial success on TV and increased popularity the Vampire Diaries also managed to win the People’s Choice Award for Favorite TV Drama series for the year 2010. Also, after its success in the US the series was aired in a number of different countries across the globe such as Argentina, Middle East, Singapore, Hong Kong, Spain, Thailand, Venezuela, New Zealand, South Africa and a number of other countries around the globe.
