Lighting Concepts

A cameraman, or more specifically, a cinematographer, has the job of painting with lights, so one must know how to mimic certain situations and be able to manipulate the light to their liking, as well as the director’s. There are four things you need to consider when setting up lights: movement, placement and intensity. This is how they break down:

Movement: “Why is the light moving?” “How much is it moving?” These are two questions a cameraman or cinematographer must ask himself. If there is no movement, fine-the scene is still. Movement causes curiosity, chaos and directs the eye to a certain place in the frame. If not trying to recreate a scene that requires lights to flicker, turn on and off at a certain rate or move back and forth as if searching for something, movement of light is not required-it just helps to make a more believable situation if necessary. Some examples of scenes that use light movement would be in a scene where the lights are going out or flickering or something like an interrogation scene. Movement could also be used to portray a lightning or a massive earthquake where everything is falling down and the power is going out. Also, any sort of club or party scene would use not only moving lights but colored lights as well.

Placement: The placement of lights is very important because any wrong placement and light leaking out of any cracks can create a whole new effect and destroy the one you’re trying to create. Light coming from places it shouldn’t looks fake and unbelievable. The best way to deal with light placement is to just intensify the practical lights (meaning those that are seen in a house)-putting the lights already given at a location on a dimmer control can do this. Think about where lights are normally seen and how bright they are when you’re out looking around and this will help you understand light better and recreate believable situations.

Using more lights makes things brighter and creates a happier mood. Therefore, villains normally are lit less and heroes are lit more to portray the darker and the lighter moods. Heroes will not be lit from underneath as much as they will from the front, back and side, using more lights. Their faces will be better lit so you can see their eyes better.

Intensity: The intensity of a light can easily create different moods. Try sitting in a dark room for ten minutes. Then try sitting in a well-lit room for ten minutes. Most likely, sitting in a well-lit room will make you feel better and happier. Perhaps your mind was wondering more in the light and you felt more scared in the dark because you didn’t know what was around you. The same goes for lighting a movie.

Intensity can also be used to represent times of the day. Obviously it’s not going to be bright outside at 10PM, so you’ll need to use dimmer lights and add some color to them. A scene with a romantic dinner would use dimmer lights as opposed to a reenactment of a football game at night. Each scene calls for a realistic intensity of light and your job as a cameraman or cinematographer is to find that realistic balance. A good idea is to take note of the light around you in every day situations-see how intense the light is, where it’s coming from and what color it emits. This will help you create more realistic lighting situations in the movies you make.

Color: The color of the light also creates mood and helps the audience understand time of day and whether the character(s) are inside or outside. Inside light tends to be more orange or tungsten, and outside light tends to be bluer.

When all these concepts are learned and mastered, they come together to create a masterpiece and can be used and manipulated in every project you shoot to invent a different, unique look. With all these concepts and a touch of your personal creativity, the possibilities of painting with light are endless!

On an average each season has had around 23 episodes with an exception of season 5 which had only 18 episodes while season 2 had the maximum number of viewers of 15.12 million.

Cold Case won IMAGE award in the category of outstanding directing in a dramatic series in 2006, won ASCAP award for the top TV series from 2004 to 2009 and it also won GLAAD media award for Outstanding Individual Episode (In a Series without a Regular Gay Character) in 2006 and it has been nominated for a number of other awards as well.

Another great character would be Katherine Pierce who had at one time loved the brother’s way back in 1864.

Additional characters of The Vampire Diaries include Steven R. McQueen as Jeremy Gilbert, Elena’s younger brother; Elena’s and Jeremy’s guardian and aunt, Jenna Sommers; Katerina Graham as a witch named Bonnie Bennet, who is also Elena’s best friend; and Zach Roerig as Matt Donovan, Elena’s ex-boyfriend. Each of these actors also returned for the television series’ second season; no changes in characters occurred.

After its initial success on TV and increased popularity the Vampire Diaries also managed to win the People’s Choice Award for Favorite TV Drama series for the year 2010. Las Vegas was quite an exciting show as late as February 2008 when it was finally called off. The show presented a series of entertaining episodes highlighting the wealthy casino adventures while taking care of the demanding tourists, various con artists and the heist planning crooks. Whoa…Some security please!!!

The highpoint of the show were the exquisite locations used for the shoot. The cast of the show was full of gorgeous and glamorous characters like Samantha (played by General Hospital’s Vanessa Marcil) and the head of operations Danny. The strongest of character, known as Ed Tiller, was a tough-as-nails owner, played by James Caan, though his character was replaced by Tom Stellar in the 5th season. While Danny struggled to prove that he could handle Ed’s operations, he had a secret affair with his daughter.

This scored with the people and the secret affair between them formed the funny part of the show which became a huge hit with the masses. The show was all about the fascinating queries that surrounded while it was being telecast. How were the diamonds confiscated? Who were the ones forging the poker chips? Many characters from the “Crossing Jordan” were also featured in the five episode segments.

The show basically showed all the top casino hotels of Las Vegas and gave an outlook on how they functioned from the inside. With James Caan leading both the show as well as the hotel it was great to watch how the show had glided along with less effort from the members of the cast.

Every episode offered multiple stories carrying them off from one to other. It seemed as if the script writers had kind of mastered the art of writing coming up with new sequences and opportunities for potential characters every now and then. Luxury Casino “The Monceito” was a perfect location for a casino giving all new opportunities for characters to bring in new twists and tricks into the show. Celebrities like Paris Hilton, Snoop Dogg, have also made quite a few appearances on the show. For four seasons the show also featured Nikki Cox, a Baywatch actress, and others interesting characters that fit the story arcs.

The show also offers some wild incidences with the camera footage capturing the acts of people doing it within the secrecies of hotel premises. Amazingly, it was even possible to instantaneously search the footage pulling out just the right clue at the right time (12 minutes before the end of the show)

The entire factual thing about the “viva Los Vegas” was brought to limelight by the show and it is no way fair to quote any setbacks for the show. The show kept up to the expectation that the opening song-the remixed Elvis generated. It carried a lot of actions as said and had very minimal dreary dialogues.
