This is a review of the classic Robert De Niro Movie “Taxi Driver.” If you’ve never seen this movie, you are missing out on one of the finest pieces of American filmmaking. Even in modern day qualifications, it is a bold masterpiece of drama and the slow descent into madness.

Our tale begins with the drive of a New York taxi on the night shift. He is wholly dissatisfied with life and the filth that he sees on a regular basis. We meet a few of his fares, and see how he develops his distaste for humanity. We actually begin to agree with his assessment of human nature.

He has a chance at normalcy when he falls for a girl that is working for a political campaign for a local politician. He even goes on a date with her, and for a brief period, it looks as though he may even have a normal relationship, which may save him from is disgusted view of humanity. Unfortunately, on his date with her, he brings her to an adult movie theater, ruining his chances of anything resembling a normal adult relationship.

This is where he begins his irreversible descent into lunacy. He finds a dealer in illegal weapons ,and buys several guns. He practices endlessly pulling out a concealed handgun. He practices in front of a mirror in what is likely one of most well known scenes from all modern movies.

He shaves his head, and plans his attempt to kill the political candidate as he is preparing to give a speech, but fails. In a strange twist of fate, he is involved in a gunfight with a pimp, and inadvertently saves the life of a young prostitute. The young girl returns home to the Midwest, and the main character is heralded as a hero who saved from a life of prostitution on the streets of New York.

The movie “Taxi Driver” is a phenomenon study in human nature, and how far one can become detached from normal reality. It’s no secret that this is one of the must see movies that should be on your list. If you haven’t see this, you should. If you have seen it, you should watch it again.
