One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest is a 1970s anti-authority type of movie. It has become a classic and a well-loved movie of many people. Most of the movie takes place in a mental hospital. It was filmed at Oregon State Hospital, in Salem Oregon. The film won the academy award in all five top categories.

The main character is Randle McMurphy, played by Jack Nicholson. McMurphy has been in and out of jails, numerous times. He is convicted of statutory rape and does not receive a long jail sentence. However, it is on a prison farm. He will have to work the whole time. He comes up with a plan. If he can get himself committed to a mental hospital, he can have an easier time. He interviews with doctors. They are a bit skeptical about his mental condition. Finally, he convinces them to commit him.

McMurphy gets to the mental hospital. He likes what he sees. Here are people that he can lead and take control of. They inmates are meek and seem uninterested in anything but following orders. His plan is soon derailed when he runs into Nurse Ratched, played by Louise Fletcher. She is in absolute control of everyone and everything. She enjoys her job and the power that she yields. It means more to her than the mental health of the men.

McMurphy amuses himself by playing the men at poker. He takes their spending money and cigarettes. He and Nurse Ratched are in a constant power struggle. There is one instance, where he wants to watch the World Series. There is only one television in the ward. He solicits the men to vote for the baseball game. He thinks he has a unanimous vote. Nurse Ratched reminds him there are many other men on the ward. It would not be fair to them. Most of them men are not aware of reality, let alone a baseball game. However, McMurphy finally gets a majority of votes. Nevertheless, she reminds him that the voting closed right before his final count. In defiance, he sits in the ward and reenacts a baseball game. It is a big hit among the inmates. Nurse Ratched smiles, knowing that she had won.

Later McMurphy bets the men that he can lift a giant water machine. He groans, struggles, and finally fails. As he walks off, the is proud of the fact that he tried. The men appreciate his effort and look up to him.

McMurphy also takes a bus. He and the men go deep-sea fishing. They have an enjoyable time. They finally return and get into a fight with orderlies. As punishment, he and others get shock therapy.

When McMurphy finds out that most of the men are voluntarily committed, he is upset. He realizes that Nurse Ratched can keep him there as long as she wants to. He thinks it is time to settle down and stop getting on her bad side. This does not last very long. McMurphy cannot resist the urge to flaunt authority. They struggle back and forth all through the film until it ends unexpectedly.

One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest is well worth watching. It has good acting and is well written. Newcomers Danny Devito and Christopher Lloyd go on to successful careers.
